Enugu House Committee Lauds Ugwuanyi on Rural Development Drives | CABLE REPORTERS


The members of the Enugu State House of Assembly Committee on Rural Development led by the committee chairman, Rt. Hon. Paul Osondu Nnajiofor JP, yesterday, commended the Enugu State Governor, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on his strides in rural areas of the state which have led to the massive development of Enugu rural communities improved standard of living of the citizenry and a reduced rate of rural-urban migration.

The committee made the commendation yesterday when they paid an oversight visit to the state office of Enugu State Rural Electrification Board, which according to the lawmakers was to look into the mandate of the parastatal saddled with the responsibility of providing electricity to the rural communities of Enugu state, to identify the progress recorded by the agency as well as their challenges since their last call to the parastatal, an oversight role which amongst lawmaking and representation are the three cardinal functions of a legislature.


The chairman, Enugu State Rural Electrification Board, Engr. Onyema Odoh thanked the lawmakers for coming, presented a copy of the Parastatals achievements to the members emphasizing that the dreaded COVID19 pandemic was the major impediment faced by the agency as they weren't able to execute all their planned programs for the rural communities due to the lockdown, he also expressed that the #EndSars protest which was hijacked by hoodlums as another major challenge due to the vandalization of streetlights in Enugu metropolitan areas by the hooligans, he also assured the lawmakers that the agency is already working on reinstalling those affected streetlights as the Government of Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has made all the needed commitment to that effect available.

On their remarks, Hon. Okwu Otaka, member representing Aninri state constituency and a member of the committee queried the agencies rationale for selecting rural communities for electrification, expressing sadness that his constituency wasn't captured in the programs.


The deputy leader of the house, Hon. Onyinye Ugwu who is also member of the committee as well as Rt. Hon. Iloabuchi Aniagu, member representing Nkanu West state constituency advised the board to always work with the legislators in identifying those rural communities that needs urgent intervention as they  know their communities more as the peoples representatives.


The house committee lauded the achievements made by the agency emphasising that rural development has remained the focal point of Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi led administration, charging them to deliver in line with Governor Ugwuanyi's developmental drives.


The committee also mandated the board to develop and submit a more detailed scorecard of the agencies achievements for easy comprehension of the general publics as the government has done a hallmark of achievements in electrifying Enugu Communities.


Other honorable members present were Hon. Jeff Mbah, Oji River constituency, Rt Hon  Chukwuka Eneh, Udi South State Constituency, and the Chief whip of Enugu state house of assembly, Hon. Jane Eneh
