The member representing Ezeagu constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chima Obieze has called on the federal government to immediately respect the rule of law by releasing the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as ordered by the Court of Appeal, describing his further incarceration as a total abuse of democratic power and gross insensitivity to the security condition of the South East.

Hon. Chima Obieze made the call on tuesday after delivering a keynote address on “Peace and Wellness” during the 10th annual Youth Peace Conference at the Godfrey Okoye University Enugu.

“One of the strongest points in the rule of law is that the decision of the court must be obeyed, I'm not interested basically in why the federal government is holding Nnamdi Kanu or not, I know it is a matter of national security and you don't delve into such issues in a haste, but my problem is that a court of competent jurisdiction; the Appeal Court, has given an order and then the federal government is still holding Nnamdi Kanu in aberration to the decision of the court. We are not in Banana Republic, we are in a country that is governed by the rule of law, we are in a democracy, and if the court has said that this man does not have any case to answer, discharge him, you discharge him, so, I don't think that the federal government is right in the continuous detention of Nnamdi Kanu, I think they are insensitive to the security challenges we are having here in the South East, and what happens with insecurity is that it starts like a joke and it begins to check out and before you know it, the entire place is on fire.” Hon. Chima Obieze

Responding to CABLE REPORTERS on some queries from his lecture, Hon. Bar. Obieze maintained that the world is in dire need of peace and that the world should endeavour to be at peace as the wars currently going on in the globe are completely unnecessary.

“My lecture today is on peace and wellness, the world needs peace, when you look at the philosophy of life, you will understand that most of the fights we do in this world are unnecessary, look at what is happening in Russia and Ukraine, when you ask yourself why they are fighting this war, you will understand that the ego of one or two men somewhere are punctured; to defend their ego and  maintain their global significance, people are dying, children are dying and it doesn't make any sense, there's no wisdom in war” Rt. Hon Obieze.

On his part, the Vice Chancellor of the Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Professor Christian Anieke in his welcome address, emphasized that one can only have a life of peace and be an instrument of peace when he gives him/herself to Christ and have Jesus Christ as his/her personal Lord and Saviour. He urged the participants to preach the message of peace and salvation through their behaviour with one another.

Reacting to Newsmen, Prof Anieke decried the level of insecurity prevalent in Nigeria, maintaining that Nigerians are peace-loving people. He stressed that Godrey Okoye University will continue to disseminate the message of peace and love through conferences like this and by their actions as a peace model, he maintained that University  pride as one of best institution for a peaceful learning environment, free from intimidation and harassment. He also charged the youths to be contented and quit the make-rich-quick syndrome.

The conference which witnessed numbers of youths and students from many institutions in Enugu state equally had Paul Herman from Leuphana University Germany, Meggy Mechthild Kantert from ICMPD, Prof Aaron Eze, Prof Pat Alison and many other dignitaries in attendance.
