In a ceremony marked by solemnity and esteemed attendance, the family of Chief Sunday Nnamani Edeani bid farewell to their revered mother-in-law, grandmother, and matriarch, Elder Chief Mary Nweji Nwafor Nwatu, who passed away at the remarkable age of 119.
The burial service, held in Isienu Obodouvuru, Akpawfu, Nkanu East, Enugu State, brought together dignitaries from diverse spheres of influence. Among those in attendance were Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa (Odalije), the former Permanent Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory and Federal Ministry of Power; Prof. Chris Ngwu, Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC); Hon. Anthony Egbo, Deputy Chairman of Enugu South Local Government, Two-times Commissioner, Bar. Emeka Okeke; Rev. Notably, she was recognized as one of the community’s longest-standing person —being the second oldest person - a testament to the enduring impact of her lifetime of contributions.
Tributes flowed freely during the service. Edeani (Nne Muru Ora), honored her mother for her sacrifices and the enduring moral values she instilled in her children. Meanwhile, her son, Chief Michael Nwatu (Ojiefi Emeogo), fondly recalled the strength and inspirational character of his late mother, noting that her legacy continues to guide and influence him.
The proceedings featured a blend of traditional rites, solemn Christian services, and vibrant cultural displays, each element reflecting the multidimensional life and enduring impact of Elder Chief Mary Nwatu. The presence of notable leaders from various sectors highlighted the broad respect she commanded and the lasting imprint she left on society.
As the final rites were observed and the matriarch’s remains laid to rest, it was evident that her legacy would endure through the lives she touched and the values she championed. Though she is no longer with us, Elder Chief Mary Nwatu’s spirit continues to inspire and guide future generations.
